Transit Visa
Short permissions to pass through a country on the way to another destination.
Transit visas cover brief stops in a country while you are en route elsewhere. Some nationalities enjoy visa-free transit, while others must request permission even if they never leave the airport.
There are two main types: airside transit (staying within the international zone) and landside transit (passing immigration to change airports or terminals). Regulations vary widely, so always check the rules for each layover country.
Typical Documents
- 1Confirmed onward ticket
Proof you will depart within the allowed transit window.
- 2Valid visa for the final destination
If the destination requires a visa, it usually must be obtained beforehand.
- 3Passport valid for six months
Some countries insist on the standard validity even for transit.
- 4Proof of funds
Occasionally required for longer layovers or overnight stays.
Airport Changes
If you must leave the international zone to collect luggage, change terminals, or switch airports, the authorities may treat this as an entry to the country. A transit visa might no longer be enough; you could need a short-stay visa instead.
Transit Tips
- Check airline guidelines β carriers may refuse boarding without proof of transit eligibility.
- Allow extra time for security checks and immigration queues.
- If you have separate tickets, ensure baggage is checked through or plan for immigration formalities.
- Carry printouts of onward tickets and visas to show border officials.
