Can I use one travel insurance policy across all three host countries?

Yes, if the policy explicitly lists all three. A US-only product does not cover treatment in Canada or Mexico; a single-country European policy does not cover anything in North America. Buy a multi-country policy that lists the US, Canada and Mexico by name and that includes at least USD 250,000 in medical coverage. Confirm the cancellation cover handles event-cancellation scenarios — most off-the-shelf travel policies do not treat a no-show match as a covered event.

Do FIFA tickets affect entry processing?

No. FIFA match tickets 🎫 are not legally required for entry and CBP / CBSA / INM officers do not need to see them. They may, however, help establish purpose of visit and length of stay if asked at the border — bringing a printout or screenshot of your tickets and your hotel confirmation is the standard recommendation for any tournament-period entry to all three countries. The ticket does not extend your visa or change your permitted stay.

Cash vs card — USD, CAD, MXN?

Card is universal across all three host countries for hotels, restaurants and ticketed venues. 🇺🇸 US contactless payment is now common but not universal — a chip-and-PIN card and a backup magnetic-stripe option are both useful. 🇨🇦 Canadian retail is heavily contactless. 🇲🇽 Mexican retail in the host cities accepts cards in most modern venues, but cash (MXN) is still important for street food, taxis (where Didi and Uber both also work) and smaller market stalls. ATM withdrawal fees in the US are notoriously high — withdraw larger sums less frequently, or use a no-foreign-fee debit card.

What's open on US Independence Day, 4 July?

Independence Day in the US falls during the Round of 16. Public transit operates on holiday/Sunday schedules; many restaurants and bars run normal hours or extend for the holiday; major retailers are open. Most banks and government offices are closed. Parade and fireworks events are added to many US host cities — Boston's harbour fireworks, Philadelphia's parade on Independence Mall, the Macy's fireworks in New York. Match-day operations at any 4 July fixture run as normal with additional security overlay. Houston (NRG) and Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial) both host Round of 16 matches on 4 July.

Do I need a Yellow Fever certificate?

No. None of the three host countries — the US, Canada or Mexico — requires Yellow Fever vaccination for entry from any other host country or from most international origins. If your itinerary connects through a Yellow Fever-endemic country in Latin America or Africa (with a stopover outside the airport transit area), check the destination country's rules; otherwise the certificate is not part of normal 2026 World Cup travel.

Are FAN ID-style schemes from previous tournaments in effect?

No. The 2022 Qatar World Cup ran the Hayya Card and the 2018 Russia World Cup ran the FAN ID, both of which functioned as visa substitutes or entry passes. Where the 2026 FIFA World Cup is played

The 2026 FIFA World Cup runs 11 June to 19 July 2026 across 16 host cities in three countries: 🇺🇸 11 in the United States, 🇨🇦 2 in Canada and 🇲🇽 3 in Mexico. Expanded for the first time to 48 teams and 104 matches, it is the largest World Cup ever staged and the first with three co-hosting nations. The tournament opens at 🇲🇽 Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — the first stadium ever to host three editions of the men's World Cup — and ends with the final 🏆 at 🇺🇸 MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on 19 July.

The one thing every fan needs to understand before they book a flight: three host countries means three different entry regimes. There is no shared World Cup-special visa. The United States runs the ESTA system for Visa Waiver Program nationals and a B-1/B-2 consular visa for everyone else; Canada runs the eTA for visa-exempt travellers and a TRV for everyone else; Mexico runs the FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) for tourists, increasingly issued digitally. The tournament format and where each stage is played

⚽ Group stage (11–27 June): 72 matches across all 16 host cities: Forty-eight teams in twelve groups of four. Each group plays six matches; every host city hosts group-stage matches. Group standings decide the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams, who advance to the Round of 32.

Three host countries, three entry regimes

🇺🇸 United States — ESTA (Visa Waiver) or B-1/B-2 consular visa: Visa Waiver Program (VWP) nationals — most EU member states, the UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and around forty other countries — apply for an ESTA online before flying. ESTA approvals normally arrive in minutes, are valid for two years and allow multiple short visits. Nationals outside the VWP — including every major Latin American football nation: 🇧🇷 Brazil, 🇦🇷 Argentina, 🇲🇽 Mexico, 🇨🇴 Colombia, 🇨🇱 Chile, 🇵🇪 Peru, 🇺🇾 Uruguay, 🇵🇾 Paraguay, 🇻🇪 Venezuela, 🇧🇴 Bolivia, 🇪🇨 Ecuador — need a full B-1/B-2 visa applied for at a US embassy or consulate. Interview wait times can stretch into months in some markets; start as early as possible. Mexican nationals additionally have access to the Border Crossing Card (BCC) regime under separate rules.
🇨🇦 Canada — eTA or TRV: Canada's Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) covers visa-exempt nationals — including US citizens (no eTA needed for US citizens) and a smaller list than the US VWP. UK, Ireland, EU member states, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea are on the list. Apply online; approval normally arrives within minutes and lasts five years. Nationals not on the eTA list need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) applied for at a Canadian visa application centre. The Mexican TRV requirement was reinstated in 2024 with a partial CUSMA-Worker eTA carve-out — confirm current status before booking. Canadian visa wait times have been substantial in major markets.
🇲🇽 Mexico — FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple): Mexico runs one of the most accessible entry regimes of the three. Nationals of around 70 countries — including all EU member states, the UK, US, Canada, Japan, South Korea and most South American countries — enter on the FMM tourist permit for up to 180 days, issued digitally for air arrivals and on a paper form at land crossings. No advance visa, no consular interview, no fee for short tourist stays at most arrival points. Travellers from countries not on the FMM list (a small group) apply for a Mexican consular visa in advance. The FMM is issued at the airport on arrival — bring a return ticket and a hotel address.

How borders work mid-tournament

Following one nation across multiple groups, or chasing a particular bracket through to the final, means crossing at least one international border. Three practical points matter.

The US ESTA does not cover Canada or Mexico — each border crossing is treated independently. An ESTA-approved fan flying San Francisco–Vancouver for the Bay Area group stage then continuing to a Canadian R32 needs the eTA on top of the ESTA, applied for separately. A fan watching at MetLife and crossing to Toronto for a Canadian fixture is the same pattern: ESTA + eTA, both active. Re-entries to the US after a side trip to Canada or Mexico do not use up your ESTA — the authorisation remains valid as long as you have not exceeded the 90-day per-visit cap and the 2-year validity window. CBP, however, may inspect at re-entry.

🇨🇦 Toronto–🇺🇸 Buffalo and 🇺🇸 San Diego–🇲🇽 Tijuana are the practical land-crossing pairings. The Toronto–Buffalo drive is ~2 hours, the Peace Bridge is the most common crossing; both an eTA and an ESTA are required if your trip uses both venues. The San Diego–Tijuana San Ysidro / Otay Mesa land crossings between Levi's Stadium fixtures and Monterrey or Guadalajara matches are technically feasible but the drive is ~20 hours each way and not practical; fly Tijuana–Monterrey/Guadalajara on Volaris or Viva Aerobus instead.

Travel insurance must explicitly list all three countries you might enter. A US-only insurance product does not cover treatment in Canada or Mexico; a Schengen-bound European single-country policy does not cover anything in North America. Buy a multi-country policy with US medical coverage of at least USD 250,000 — US private hospital billing is the most expensive in the world for uninsured patients.

Getting to the host cities

Most fans arrive by long-haul flight to a major gateway, then move between host cities by domestic flight or rental car. The principal international gateways are 🇺🇸 JFK and EWR (New York/New Jersey), LAX (Los Angeles), ORD (Chicago, useful for connections though Chicago is not a host city), DFW (Dallas), ATL (Atlanta — the busiest passenger airport in the world), IAH (Houston), MIA (Miami), SFO (San Francisco), SEA (Seattle) and 🇨🇦 YYZ (Toronto), YVR (Vancouver), 🇲🇽 MEX (Mexico City) on the Canadian and Mexican sides.

Demand will be exceptional through June and July 2026. Flights between US host cities, normally cheap and frequent, will see surge pricing on match-day routes; major hotels in host cities are already showing limited availability for match windows. Booking early — by Q4 2025 at the latest for prime fixtures — is the practical recommendation. Rental cars at host-city airports also see surge pricing during tournament weeks; for fans staying in one or two host cities, rideshare and public transit are often cheaper than a 14-day rental.

Domestic flights vs rental car: a US-only itinerary (e.g. New York → Boston → Philadelphia → Atlanta) is cheaper by rental car than by domestic flight given the time-savings; an itinerary that crosses to Canada or Mexico is faster by flight (rental cars cannot cross borders without prior arrangement with the rental company, and one-way drop-off fees across the border are punitive).

The 16 host cities — and where the stadiums actually sit

Six of the eleven US host stadiums are not in the city they are named after. 🏟️ Gillette Stadium ('Boston') is in Foxborough, 45 km southwest of Boston proper. 🏟️ AT&T Stadium ('Dallas') is in Arlington, between Dallas and Fort Worth. 🏟️ SoFi Stadium ('Los Angeles') is in Inglewood, 20 km south of downtown LA. 🏟️ Hard Rock Stadium ('Miami') is in Miami Gardens, 25 km north of South Beach. 🏟️ MetLife Stadium ('New York') is in East Rutherford, New Jersey, across the Hudson River. 🏟️ Levi's Stadium ('San Francisco') is in Santa Clara, 70 km south of the city. Two Mexican host stadiums similarly sit in suburbs: 🏟️ Estadio Akron ('Guadalajara') is in Zapopan and 🏟️ Estadio BBVA ('Monterrey') is in Guadalupe.

For fans, this means three practical realities. (1) The hotel cluster that matches your itinerary may not be in the city the match is officially advertised in. Booking a downtown Boston hotel for a Gillette match means a 45-minute drive each way. (2) Transit on match day from the main city to the stadium suburb is the biggest single planning question for these venues — most are served by tournament-only shuttle buses, but private rideshare and rental cars also work. (3) Local time zones matter when fans are crossing the country: a 6 pm Pacific kickoff at SoFi is 9 pm Eastern in New York and 8 pm Central in Mexico City. The four US time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific) plus Mexico Central (CDMX) and Mexico Mountain (Monterrey / Guadalajara) span four hours of clock difference across the host cities.

At the stadium 🏟️ — bag policy, transit and kickoff times

Bag policy at all FIFA World Cup venues follows a strict clear-bag standard. Soft, small clear bags (typically 30 × 30 cm or less) plus a separate small clutch are allowed; full backpacks, large camera bags and outside food and drink are not. Sealed empty water bottles are normally allowed and refilled inside the stadium. Confirm exact dimensions with the venue's official page closer to your match — they tighten in 2026 versus club-football norms.

Match-day transit for the six suburb-stadiums (Foxborough, Arlington, Inglewood, Miami Gardens, East Rutherford, Santa Clara) is the single biggest planning question. Each will run tournament-only shuttle bus services from their main city; tickets often bundle with the match ticket 🎫. Where rail is available — MARTA in Atlanta, SEPTA in Philadelphia, Link in Seattle, SkyTrain in Vancouver, TTC streetcar in Toronto, NJ Transit in NJ — service is increased on match days. Mexico City's Tren Ligero to Estadio Azteca has historically run dedicated match-day frequencies.

Kickoff times in 2026 span four US time zones plus two Mexican ones. A 12:00 noon kickoff at SoFi Stadium (Pacific) is 3 pm Eastern in New York and 2 pm Central in Mexico City. The tournament committee has organised most kickoffs to balance European prime-time viewing with reasonable local attendance. Fans planning back-to-back matches across host cities need to track time zone changes in their itinerary, particularly when crossing from Mexico (no daylight saving in the central zone since 2022) into the US (which observes daylight saving in summer).

Travel insurance and health for the tournament

Travel insurance is not legally required for any of the three host countries, but US private healthcare is the most expensive in the world for uninsured patients — a single emergency-room visit for a minor injury can run into thousands of dollars; a serious illness or accident easily into six figures. Buy a multi-country travel insurance policy that explicitly covers the US, Canada and Mexico and that lists medical coverage of at least USD 250,000 per incident.
