Overview
The Honorary Consulate of Hungary in Eisenstadt holds a special place in the network: it sits in the capital of Burgenland, the Austrian federal state that was part of the Kingdom of Hungary until 1921 and that still hosts Austria's recognised Hungarian minority. The office is at Haidäcker Park 1 in Eisenstadt, and the Honorary Consul is Ing. Peter Koloman Németh, in post since May 2010 — a name that itself reflects the deep Austro-Hungarian intermingling of this border region. The longer office hours (Monday to Thursday 08:00–16:00, Friday 08:00–14:00) compared with most honorary consulates reflect the much higher demand: Burgenland's Hungarian-speaking community, the constant cross-border movement to and from Sopron just 4 km away across the Austrian-Hungarian border, and the dense web of Austro-Hungarian family ties along the entire eastern frontier. As with other honorary posts, the office's authority is limited to first-line guidance, document verification, and referral. Passport, visa and full consular acts go to the Hungarian Embassy's Consular Section in Vienna (Schenkenstraße 3), which holds the territorial competence for Burgenland.
Consular Services
First-line consular contact and document authentication for the Burgenland Hungarian community. The office can verify documents, give initial guidance on civil-status and citizenship matters (including the simplified naturalisation procedure that is particularly relevant for the historical Hungarian minority in Austria), and facilitate referrals to the Vienna Consular Section. The office cannot itself issue Hungarian passports, identity cards or visas, and cannot perform notarial acts requiring full embassy authority.
Service Area
Burgenland. The office's jurisdiction is limited to this single federal state. Full consular services for Burgenland residents are provided by the Hungarian Embassy's Consular Section in Vienna at Schenkenstraße 3.
Appointment Information
Office hours are Monday to Thursday 08:00–16:00 and Friday 08:00–14:00 — substantially longer than at most honorary consulates, reflecting the elevated demand from Burgenland's Hungarian-speaking community. Walk-ins are accepted within those hours; an advance call or email helps for non-urgent matters. Contact: +43 2682 62768-36, fax +43 5909074315, email konsulat@nemeth-eisenstadt.at. For services requiring full embassy authority, contact the Hungarian Embassy Consular Section in Vienna directly (+43 1 537 80 300, info.wien@mfa.gov.hu).
Special Notes
Burgenland was part of the Kingdom of Hungary until the Treaties of Saint-Germain (1919) and Trianon (1920) transferred the German-speaking western strip to the newly established Republic of Austria. The Treaty of Sopron / Ödenburg in 1921 settled the final border (Sopron itself voted to remain in Hungary in a December 1921 plebiscite, which is why it is still inside Hungary today despite being deep in what would otherwise be Burgenland). The recognised Hungarian Volksgruppe in Burgenland — concentrated around Oberwart/Felsőőr and Oberpullendorf/Felsőpulya — retains bilingual schooling, cultural institutions and legal recognition, making this honorary consulate the natural local contact point for minority-related questions and for the dense everyday traffic across the border. Working languages are Hungarian and German.
