Hamburger Kunsthalle
Hamburg
Hamburg's flagship art museum on Glockengießerwall, in three connected buildings between the main station and the Alster. The collection runs from medieval altarpieces (Master Bertram's Grabow Altar) through 19th-century German Romanticism (Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog) and Impressionism into a Gallery of Contemporary Art opened in 1997 by O. M. Ungers — one of the most important public art collections in Germany.
