Overview

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Rome manages the Sino-Italian bilateral relationship. Italy was the first G7 country to sign a Belt and Road Initiative memorandum with China (2019, not renewed 2024). Bilateral trade covers machinery, fashion, luxury goods, automotive, food products and technology. Italy is a major destination for Chinese tourists — Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and the Amalfi Coast draw millions of visitors. The embassy coordinates consulates general in Milan and Florence.

The consular section oversees visa policy. Most applicants are directed to the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in Rome.

The Marco Polo and Turandot programmes facilitate Chinese students studying at Italian universities. Italy's historical connection to China through Marco Polo's travels provides a cultural foundation for bilateral exchange.
