Overview
The Australian Embassy in Beijing manages the bilateral relationship between Australia and China — Australia's largest trading partner. China is the dominant destination for Australian exports, principally iron ore, coal, LNG, agricultural products (beef, wine, barley, seafood), education services and tourism. The embassy coordinates consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Hong Kong. The large Australian business community and the substantial Chinese student population in Australia drive significant consular and visa activity.
Visa Services
The embassy processes visa applications for Chinese citizens travelling to Australia. Australia's visa system is entirely online. Key categories include tourist (subclass 600), student (subclass 500), work (subclass 482/494) and business visas.
Consular Services
The consular section provides passport services, notarial acts and emergency assistance to Australian nationals across northern and central China.
Trade & Export Support
Australia exports iron ore, coal, LNG, gold, beef, wine, dairy, seafood, wool and education services to China. Austrade (Australian Trade and Investment Commission) operates from the embassy to support Australian exporters and attract Chinese investment. The Australia-China Business Council supports bilateral trade.
Cultural & Educational Programs
Australia is one of the most popular study destinations for Chinese students, with hundreds of thousands enrolled in Australian universities and vocational institutions. The embassy promotes Australian education through regular education fairs and institutional partnerships. Cultural exchange includes film, Indigenous art and sporting ties (particularly cricket and Australian football).
